Topical Bible study has been a mainstay of American Evangelicalism, and there are a number of exhaustive topical indexes such as to Nave’s Topical Index or the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible Index.

Though we much prefer that you endeavor to complete our 3.5-year study through the Harmony of the Gospels, we’re in the process of creating Harmony’s Topical Index. Like the Navigator’s Topical Bible Memory System this resource highlights core themes in the Harmony of the Gospels and provides a few cross references for your edification. Give it a try! Simply mouse over or touch any of the topical cards. Try to memorize the passage and test yourself. Use Harmony’s Topical Index to help those you are discipling through particular questions, temptations, and spiritual battles. In time we will improve our use of “Tags” and publish topical “Lessons” for each subject.

New cards will be added as time allows. Please contact us if you’d like to help complete Harmony’s Topical Index.

Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? John Piper’s book, What Jesus Demands from the World is a topical study summarizing “50 Commands of Christ” helping readers honor Jesus’ last command: “Make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20).

James E. Smith,1 posted the following statistics citing the top (60%) topical themes of Jesus’ teachings:

In the four Gospels there are 1,854 red letter verses in which Jesus is directly speaking. Of these 341 (19%) are comments that clearly have no direct teaching value. For example, Jesus often engaged in casual conversation with his disciples or with those in his audience. Removing these non-teaching verses left 1,513 verses to be analyzed. I found that the Gospel of Matthew had the most red letter teaching verses both in terms of raw numbers (1,071) and percentage (55%) of the total material in the book.

The top ten subjects addressed in the teaching of Jesus are these:

  1. Eternal life and salvation (46 vv; 3.04%);
  2. Prayer (48 vv.; 3.17%);
  3. Persecution (54 vv; 3.57%);
  4. Judgment and hell (61 vv; 4.03%);
  5. Predictions, especially about his disciples and himself (67 vv; 4.43%);
  6. Hypocrisy (73 vv; 4.82%);
  7. Second coming (79 vv; 5.22%);
  8. Fate of Jerusalem and the evil generation that rejected Jesus (119 vv; 7.87%);
  9. Jesus’ identity and mission (129 vv; 8.53%); and
  10. The subject that Jesus spoke about most was the kingdom (159 vv; 10.51%)—its nature, entrance requirements and nearness.

Note: He found sixteen verses which had the primary teaching emphasis on marriage and divorce (1.06%), and forty-three verses (2.84%) that addressed treasure and greed. – What did Jesus Teach?
